Airport Authority Opens First Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Station at BNA

NASHVILLE ─ In keeping with its commitment to advance sustainable practices and environmentally sound initiatives, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) today officially opened its first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station at Nashville International Airport (BNA) to fuel all BNA parking lot shuttles and CNG-fueled company vehicles.

CNG is produced by compressing natural gas – primarily composed of methane – to less than 1 percent of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. The result is an odorless, tasteless and colorless clean-burning fuel that can be used in place of gasoline.

Since the first of the year, all 28 parking shuttles at BNA are fueled by CNG, making them clean powered and sustainable. This conversion from petroleum-based fuels to cleaner burning CNG across the airport’s shuttle bus fleet is anticipated to reduce the bus fleet’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 14 percent. MNAA is currently in the process of transitioning all company vehicles to CNG-fueled vehicles as well.

“Sustainability is always a top priority in every project the Airport Authority takes on,” said Rob Wigington, MNAA president and CEO. “We officially transitioned to CNG-fueled shuttles in early January, so from a sustainability perspective, it only made sense that we also open and operate a compressed natural gas fueling station for our new fleet. We will continue to look for creative ways to make a positive impact on our environment for generations to come.”

“As a recognized leader in sustainability, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has taken yet another bold step in providing green transportation to its customers,” said Mark Riley, regional vice president of Sales at Clean Energy. “We are honored to be a part of this project, and to help the Authority to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions here at the airport by an estimated 846 Metric Tons per year.”

MNAA has been recognized for the scope and quality of its sustainable practices in recent years. Some recent awards include 2016 Airports Going Green, 2016 Airport Council International – North America Environmental Achievement Award, 2015 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award in the Sustainable Performance category and “Game Changer” by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
