Arts at the Airport: Spring Flying Solo Series Opens March 4

NASHVILLE – The spring installment of the Flying Solo series at Nashville International Airport (BNA) is now open and runs through May 26, 2019. The exhibit is part of BNA’s Arts at the Airport program.

Each season, the Flying Solo series offers arts organizations and gifted local artists an opportunity to exhibit their work at BNA. Spring 2019 Flying Solo series artists include Travis Curtis, Suzanne Sidebottom, Byron Jorjorian and a group mosaic exhibit curated by Sherri Warner Hunter. Additionally, the Word of Mouth: Nashville Conversations exhibit is on display through April 15, 2019.

Travis E. Curtis is a Nashville native who enjoys making Windsor chairs in both traditional and modern styles. His grandfather, Edward L. Curtis, worked in the finishing department of Gibson Guitar Co., and his grandmother, Charlesie Marie Curtis, was a master carver for Davis Cabinet Co. Both grandparents instilled a love for woodworking and pride in craftsmanship in Curtis from an early age. Curtis, a lifelong amateur, turned professional in 2012. He designs and builds Windsor chairs and furniture in his Whites Creek, Tenn., workshop. www.windsorsandmore.com

Suzanne Sidebottom

Suzanne Sidebottom’s first 22 years in life were spent in Nashville, Tenn. Her life changed when she studied clay with world-class artist Sylvia Hyman at Peabody College. Today, her “Trompe l’oeil” work features everyday objects realistically crafted from clay and printed with underglazes using antique and artist-designed printing blocks and artist-made decals. She has exhibited in 59 juried and invitational exhibitions across the U.S. over the past six years, was published in “500 Prints on Clay: An Inspiring Collection of Image Transfer Work,” and has sculptures in numerous private collections. www.itsclay.com

Byron Jorjorian

Byron Jorjorian is a master photographer and printer who has specialized in nature and abstract photography for more than 36 years. Jorjorian works daily with interior designers and art consultant teams across the country with over 23,000 prints installed. He has more than 575,000 images in his collection and has had more than 12,000 images reproduced in many publications, including National Geographic Magazine. www.byronjorjorian.com

Mosaic works by seven artists were curated by Sherri Warner Hunter. Featured artists include Daub Akhriev, Mary Borgen, Lynn Driver, Erin S. Johnson, Prado Studio, Diana Johnson Wiles and Sherri Warner Hunter. Each of the exhibiting artists work in many mediums, but each has found that the mosaic processes, materials and techniques provide exciting options for creating art that cannot be accomplished in any other medium. Word of Mouth: Nashville Conversations, interviews by Lily Hansen, is a multimedia conversation and portrait photography series which captures the zeitgeist that is Music City. Even while in a state of metamorphosis, Nashville also manages to stay true to its roots. www.wordofmouthconversations.com

Arts at the Airport
Working closely with the 15-member Arts at the Airport Foundation board, Nashville International Airport (BNA) showcases the region’s visual and performing arts through its Arts at the Airport program, which receives some funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission. This award-winning program presents work by local, regional and national artists for the enjoyment and enrichment of passengers and visitors at BNA.
