Nashville International Airport Exceeds 12 Million Passengers in Fiscal Year 2016

New All-Time Passenger Record Set for Third Consecutive Fiscal Year; June Busiest Month in BNA History

NASHVILLE ─ The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) today announced Nashville International Airport (BNA) served more than 12.2 million passengers in Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 (July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016), setting a new all-time passenger record for the third consecutive fiscal year. This is the first time in BNA history to break 12 million passengers.

“This has been an extraordinary year for Nashville International Airport on so many different levels,” said Rob Wigington, MNAA president and CEO. “Our financial position is strong, we’ve launched a host of new airlines and flights, and passenger numbers are off the charts.  Going forward, we’ll continue working to meet the region’s growth and prepare for BNA’s future.”

In FY16, 12,293,924 passengers traveled into and out of BNA, a strong 9.8 percent increase over the previous fiscal year.

June also set a new record as the busiest month in BNA history with 1,206,083 passengers, beating the record set in May 2016 that broke the previous 24-year-old record.

Additionally, BNA launched a number of new initiatives and services in FY16, including:

  • Alaska Airlines joining the BNA team with new nonstop, year-round service to Seattle,
  • Long-sought-after service to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) through United Airlines,
  • JetBlue beginning service at BNA with twice-daily nonstop service to Boston and daily nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale,
  • WestJet joining the BNA team with nonstop service to Toronto,
  • Frontier Airlines beginning nonstop service to Orlando, Chicago and Philadelphia,
  • Daily service to Tupelo, Miss., via Contour Airlines,
  • Southwest Airlines announced daily nonstop service to Charlotte beginning Aug. 7,
  • Frontier Airlines announced daily nonstop service to Las Vegas beginning Sept. 6,
  • Opening three new restaurants at BNA: Hissho Sushi, Tennessee Brew Works and Berry Field Bistro,
  • Groundbreaking and completion of the largest geothermal lake plate cooling system in North America, which cools the entire terminal building and saves more than $430,000 in utility costs per year,
  • Opening three solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations on the top of the Short Term Parking Garage,
  • Opened Nashville International Airport’s newest parking lot, BNA Express Park, and
  • Opened an additional 80-space free cell phone waiting lot.

It was also a banner fiscal year for John C. Tune (JWN) Airport, which saw a runway extension, Runway Safety Area improvements and complete terminal renovation, enhancing its position as Tennessee’s premiere general aviation airport.

Early this month, Travel + Leisure readers ranked BNA the 9th Best Domestic Airport as part of its World’s Best Awards 2016.

BNA is currently served by 12 airlines and offers 390 daily flights. Nashville International Airport provides nonstop air service to more than 50 destinations.
