Plug In & Fly: Nashville International Airport Opens Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

NASHVILLE – Demonstrating its commitment to sustainability initiatives, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) hosted a ribbon-cutting event on Sept. 24 to unveil new solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations at Nashville International Airport (BNA). The three charging stations—two regular and one-quick charger—are housed under a solar panel canopy array that uses the sun’s energy to power electric vehicles.

“Being responsible stewards of our environment is a core pillar of our customer service approach—the Nashville Airports Experience,” said Rob Wigington, MNAA president and CEO. “As Nashville and Middle Tennessee continue to grow, sustainability initiatives such as this are essential to ensuring we reduce our environmental impact and conserve natural resources.”

Located on the top level of the Short Term Parking Garage, the new solar-powered charging stations allow travelers with electric vehicles to easily recharge their cars while parked at the airport. When vehicles are not charging, power produced by the solar panels feeds into the Short Term Parking Garage to support elements such as lighting and signage.

MNAA was awarded an $181,000 Clean Tennessee Energy grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to help fund the project.

Nashville International Airport is currently served by 10 airlines and offers 390 daily arriving and departing flights. Nashville International provides nonstop air service to more than 50 markets. In fiscal year 2015 (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015), BNA set a new record serving more than 11.1 million passengers.
