Nashville International Airport® Unveils Spring 2023 Flying Solo Art Exhibits

New art exhibit in Concourse D features work of ceramic and photography

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 3, 2023) – The Spring 2023 installation of the Flying Solo art exhibit at BNA® opens today and runs through June 26, 2023, featuring pieces by acclaimed artists Cesar Pita and Rod McGaha.

Part of BNA’s Arts at the Airport program, the Flying Solo series is a rotating exhibit that offers art organizations and special artists an opportunity to exhibit their work to millions of travelers within the airport terminal each season.

The Spring 2023 Flying Solo pieces feature work that represents each artist’s unique background and perspective on identity and community. A brief biography of the featured artists and their work is as follows:

Cesar Pita

Cesar Pita is a ceramicist born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents. Pita was primarily raised in the South, which influenced Cesar’s work and became the motivation for him to advocate for his community. Pita’s work revolves around cultural exploration and celebration. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Middle Tennessee State University and is currently an art handler and a teacher at Buchanan Arts in North Nashville.

Rod McGaha

Rod McGaha is a Nashville-based musician and visual artist who specializes in portrait photography with characters entwined in a whirl of activism, music and Black identity. Through his art, he hopes to emanate benevolence and educate young people. McGaha graduated from Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. His journey to becoming a visual artist is as captivating as his work: he entered the art world as a means of healing through photography. Music informs his artistic process as an acknowledged jazz trumpeter. He was mentioned by Clark Terry of the Duke Ellington and Count Basie orchestras, and spent three years with the legendary Max Roach.

Created in 1988, BNA’s Arts at the Airport is an ever-growing, ever-changing showcase of cultural diversity and creative talent in Tennessee. The terminal and surrounding facilities were designed to incorporate rotating public art exhibits and permanent acquisitions and opportunities for live entertainment performances throughout the airport.
