In the late 1960s, Nashville civic leaders — led by pilot, attorney, businessman and community advocate John C. Tune — identified the need for a facility dedicated to serving small general aviation aircraft. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) launched a general aviation site study in 1972, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved a site in the Cockrill Bend area of West Nashville.

Construction on John C. Tune Airport® (JWN®) began in 1983, and the airport opened to the public in July 1986. Built on roughly 300 acres, JWN quickly became an essential contributor to Middle Tennessee’s economic growth. The airport debuted with a 5,000‑by‑100‑foot runway and a 10,000‑square‑foot conventional hangar.

Expansion followed rapidly. In 1986, 10 T‑hangars were added. By 1988, the airport had built 44 more T‑hangars, an 18,000‑square‑foot conventional hangar and installed a localizer with distance‑measuring equipment. An automated weather observation system (AWOS) was commissioned in 1990.

A 500‑foot extension to the north end of Runway 2‑20 was completed in 1991. A new terminal building opened in 1995, offering a pilot lounge, flight‑planning room, weather information center, conference room, vending area, restrooms and showers.

Growth continued through the late 1990s. Twenty T‑hangars were added in 1996, and an instrument landing system (ILS) was installed on Runway 20. A GPS nonprecision approach for Runway 2 and another 20 T‑hangars were completed in 1998.

In 2006, 31 T‑hangars were constructed on the south ramp, along with Taxiway R3, which created a second entrance to the main terminal ramp. A year later, an 18,000‑square‑foot clear‑span hangar and 2,500 square feet of office space were added. Taxiway R1 and eight additional T‑hangars followed in 2011.

MNAA began planning major airfield renovations in 2012 to bring runway safety areas (RSA) into compliance with FAA standards, which require a 500‑foot‑wide RSA extending 1,000 feet beyond each runway end.

In 2013, Centennial Boulevard north of the airport was closed, Cockrill Bend Circle was extended and site preparation began for the RSA improvements. By 2015, the north RSA had been extended 500 feet to meet FAA requirements. On the south end, the RSA was extended 750 feet and an Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) was installed. EMAS uses crushable material to safely stop aircraft that overrun the runway and is recommended when a full 1,000‑foot RSA is not feasible.

An Aerial View of the John C Tune landing strip. The runway itself was extended from 5,000 to 6,000 feet. Additional upgrades included runway grade repairs, new lighting and signage, a precision approach path indicator, a new ILS, reconstructed taxiways and an extension of Taxiway A. Landside improvements included apron and hangar floor rehabilitation, landscaping and signage enhancements and terminal renovations.

JWN received the FAA Southern Region Airports Division’s 2015 General Aviation Airport Safety Award and the Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee for its safety improvements. In 2016, the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Aeronautics Commission and the Tennessee Aviation Association named JWN Airport of the Year.

On March 3, 2020, an EF‑2 tornado caused catastrophic damage at JWN. Infrastructure losses were estimated at $93 million, excluding personal property. More than 90 aircraft were destroyed, and 17 hangars were damaged or lost. Despite the devastation, full operations resumed within 17 days, and MNAA immediately began planning a major redevelopment.

In July 2020, MNAA launched a comprehensive redevelopment initiative — Tune Taking Off — to rebuild and expand airport facilities. Ground was broken on the $38.8 million project on July 20, 2021, the airport’s 35th anniversary.

That same year, a new 99‑foot air traffic control tower opened. Planned well before the 2020 tornado, the tower represented a major modernization milestone for JWN and was designed to support the airport’s long‑term growth.

Today, John C. Tune Airport® (JWN®) has evolved from a visionary concept in the 1960s into one of the region’s most important general aviation assets — a facility shaped by decades of expansion, modernization and resilience.
